ESL and Bilingual Endorsements
If you have an Illinois teaching license and want ESL approval, you need 18 credit hours that meet specific requirements.
For the bilingual education endorsement, it’s still 18 credit hours (5 classes are the same, with a different methods class).
You’ll need to pass the Target Language Proficiency or English Language Proficiency test. Currently, the ESL endorsement does not require a test to work with English language learners.
Reading Endorsements
This endorsement can be achieved by completing the required 18 credit hours in our program, which covers all necessary topics. Additionally, after finishing the courses, you will need to take a reading teacher test administered by the state.
LBS1 Endorsement
Teachers interested in obtaining an LBS1 endorsement will need to complete just 4 courses (12 credit hours). After finishing the courses, you must pass the learning behavior specialist test administered by the state
Other Endorsements
Most other endorsements, such as physical education, social studies, and health, do not require specific program approval. While the Illinois State Board of Education does not have pre-approved programs, adding an endorsement involves a few straightforward steps:
- Request a transcript review. ISBE will inform you of how many hours you need for the endorsement, and you may already have qualifying classes on your transcripts.
- Complete 18 hours of acceptable coursework. Click the link and scroll down to see that our courses meet the acceptable criteria.
- Submit your official transcripts to ISBE for approval.
Many endorsements will also require you to pass an exam to qualify. Additional information is available from ISBE throughout the process.
