Course Description:
An awareness of the importance of Social Emotional Learning has increased in schools and the classroom during the last decade. This course is designed to give teachers the knowledge to understand Social Emotional Learning and develop the skills necessary to promote a student’s social emotional development. It is important for teachers to work with school leaders to create a positive school culture and environment. The course materials will introduce SEL programs and how to implement and assess their effectiveness. The course will also make connections between SEL and academics as well as how to make Cultural adaptations and modifications to SEL programs.
Learning Outcomes/Competencies:
At the completion of this course, the learner will be able to:
- Define and understand Social and Emotional Learning. INTASC 2, 4, 5
- Understand and use the three-tiered “triangle of support” INTASC 2, 3
- Implement SEL curricula and practices into lessons. INTASC 4, 7
- Understand the different SEL programs that can be implemented into your classroom and schools. The programs can be implemented in the general education classroom and focus on students’ social and emotional development. INTASC 4, 7, 8, 10
- Identify how to select a packaged SEL program that meets the needs of your classroom or school. INTASC 1, 2, 3, 3, 4, 7, 8, 10
- Determine how to prepare and plan for implementation of an SEL program. INTASC 7
- Understand the connection between SEL and academics and how to apply SEL to improve academic performance. INTASC 1, 2, 3, 4
- Adapt SEL for use in our Multicultural World and how to make Cultural adaptations and modifications to SEL programs. INTASC 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
- Identify the common assessment methods and evaluation strategies in SEL and the assessment data needed to monitor intervention progress for individual students. INTASC 7, 8
